Aya Miyaguchi to focus on institutional growth as Ethereum Foundation’s new president

Aya Miyaguchi to focus on institutional growth as Ethereum Foundation’s new president EF restructures leadership

Aya Miyaguchi’s promotion to President of the Ethereum Foundation (EF) was revealed in a blog post on the organization’s website. Shortly after, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin confirmed the information, emphasizing her practical role in EF’s initiatives.

"Aya first shared the idea of transitioning from Executive Director to President a year ago," Buterin stated.

"She has achieved a lot in her seven years as EF’s Executive Director. I see the role of an Executive Director as creating an environment where others can thrive and do their best work. Every success of EF—the smooth execution of Ethereum hard forks, client coordination workshops, Devcon, Ethereum’s culture, and unwavering commitment to its mission and values—is in part a result of Aya’s leadership."

However, given the community’s criticism of EF, which peaked in January, and Buterin’s acknowledgment of the need for reforms, Miyaguchi’s "self-appointment" as President was perceived by some as a power grab.

A power grab or a strategic appointment?

According to PAN News, the recent changes at EF do not indicate a loss of control by Vitalik Buterin. In January, Aya Miyaguchi, as EF’s Executive Director, faced the most criticism from community members.

Some had proposed replacing her with former Ethereum Foundation researcher and developer Danny Ryan, who left the organization in 2024 for personal reasons. Many even considered him a more effective leader for EF than Buterin himself.

However, Buterin defended Miyaguchi, clarifying that of the three EF board members—himself, Miyaguchi, and Patrick Storchenegger—he alone has the authority to make personnel decisions.

Thus, the appointment of Miyaguchi as EF President aligns with Buterin’s interests and serves as recognition of her years of organizational work.

In her blog post, Miyaguchi mentioned that a new governance model for EF is expected soon, and her role as President will focus on strengthening institutional relationships and expanding Ethereum’s broader vision and culture.

As we wrote, Ethereum price action has taken a sharp downturn early this week, breaking out of a two-week consolidation and falling over 17% since the week began.
