McGregor memecoin fails during pre-sale

Conor McGregor’s highly publicized entry into the cryptocurrency world has stumbled out of the gate, as his REAL memecoin failed to meet even the minimum funding threshold during its initial presale.
The project, which aimed to raise at least $1 million, brought in only $392,000—just 31% of its goal—before the team suspended the launch and refunded investors, reports Crypto News.
The 28-hour presale, run via a sealed-bid auction, attracted just 668 participants. Despite the involvement of high-profile backers such as Animoca Brands and KuCoin Labs, the token’s underwhelming reception highlights a growing skepticism around celebrity-driven crypto ventures. McGregor’s camp had pitched the REAL token as a more transparent and community-oriented alternative to the wave of questionable celebrity tokens that have plagued the market in recent months.
Market Conditions and Investor Caution Dampen Enthusiasm
The REAL token was promoted as a cornerstone of the Real World Gaming DAO, with promises of DAO governance rights, staking rewards, and utility within a gaming ecosystem. The proposed tokenomics allocated 31.5% to the DAO treasury and 16.5% to the community, while 10% was earmarked for the team—a detail that raised early concerns about long-term incentives.
But the presale came at a challenging time for the memecoin market, still reeling from the fallout of February’s LIBRA scandal and other high-profile flops. Despite efforts to distance itself from past failures, the REAL token’s muted response suggests that investors are demanding stronger fundamentals and clearer value propositions before committing funds—especially when a project is fronted by a celebrity.
While McGregor’s team insists the project will continue in some form, the token’s official launch has been postponed indefinitely. The failed raise underscores a broader shift in sentiment across the digital asset space: star power alone may no longer be enough to secure investor trust in a maturing and more cautious market.
