Bhutan launches first ever crypto payment system for tourism with Binance

Bhutan has introduced the world’s first national-level cryptocurrency tourism payment system in partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank, the country’s first fully digital bank.
Dubbed “One Wallet, One Journey,” the system enables tourists to pay for all travel-related expenses using digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Binance Coin, reports Cryptopolitan.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize Bhutan’s financial landscape and support local vendors, allowing them to accept over 100 cryptocurrencies through QR code transactions.
Crypto Reserves Signal Bhutan’s Economic Shift
Alongside the tourism payment system, Bhutan has incorporated Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Binance Coin into its national reserves as part of the newly established Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). The initiative aims to foster financial stability and attract investments while aligning with Bhutan’s economic vision, which emphasizes gross national happiness over GDP.
Regulations governing digital assets are being developed to ensure secure and compliant usage within the nation’s financial infrastructure.
Global Attention for Green Crypto Economy
Bhutan’s embrace of cryptocurrency extends beyond tourism and reserves. The country is leveraging its abundant hydropower to position itself as a sustainable hub for Bitcoin mining. This green mining strategy complements the new tourism payment system, attracting global attention for its integration of blockchain technology into daily commerce.
Binance CEO Richard Teng praised Bhutan’s forward-thinking approach, emphasizing how crypto can bridge traditional and modern economies while promoting financial inclusion in remote regions.
Recently we wrote that the UK government has formally ruled out the creation of a national cryptocurrency reserve, distancing itself from the path taken by U.S. lawmakers and some state-level governments.
