Vitalik Buterin shares what crypto wallets should be like Ethereum founder urges wallet privacy boost in bid for enhanced decentralization

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin has called on developers to focus on enhancing wallet privacy and security, describing wallets as the gateway for users to access Ethereum's decentralized features.

In a detailed blog post on Tuesday, the 30-year-old outlined practical steps and forward-thinking ideas to improve the wallet ecosystem, many of which leading platforms Coinbase and Uniswap are considering integrating, reports Bitcoin News.

Vitalik’s Vision for the Future of Wallets

In his 4,000-word post, Buterin stressed that wallets must uphold Ethereum’s core principles, such as decentralization, privacy, and security, for users to fully benefit from the blockchain’s capabilities. Among his recommendations are:

Privacy enhancements: Leveraging protocols like Waku for secure transaction communication.Security upgrades: Integrating zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-SNARKs) in products like Myna Wallet and zkemail to safeguard against hacks.ZK-wrapped IDs: Transforming traditional government or corporate IDs into Ethereum-compatible addresses to simplify identity-based transactions. While many of these ideas are achievable with current infrastructure, Buterin’s blog also ventured into long-term possibilities like AI-driven wallets and active defense systems to counter hacks. However, he warned that these futuristic solutions are not yet reliable for securing assets.

“This is not intended to be a complete list,” Buterin clarified. “The goal is to provide a starting point for what an ideal Ethereum wallet could look like.”

Coinbase and Uniswap Respond to the Call

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expressed support for Buterin’s proposals, particularly the concept of social recovery for key management. Social recovery allows users to designate trusted individuals or institutions as guardians to help retrieve access to funds in case of a lost key.

“Social recovery is a good idea, surprised we haven’t made more progress on it,” Armstrong wrote on X. He hinted that Coinbase Wallet could soon adopt similar features.

Similarly, decentralized exchange Uniswap stated its intent to explore Buterin’s ideas, reflecting a growing industry-wide focus on improving wallet functionality.

The Path Forward for Ethereum Wallets

While some of Buterin’s recommendations, such as social recovery and ZK-SNARK integration, are actionable today, his long-term vision relies on advancing emerging technologies. In the short term, platforms like Coinbase and Uniswap are expected to prioritize feasible improvements, potentially setting new standards for wallet privacy and security.

As Buterin aptly summarized: “A wallet’s properties define the extent to which users can fully realize the benefits of Ethereum. It’s time to build wallets that meet the moment.”
