Semler Scientific buys Bitcoins for $50 million

Semler Scientific, a Nasdaq-listed medical device company, has added 455 BTC worth $50 million to its Bitcoin holdings between May 13 and May 22, 2025.

The latest purchase brings its total Bitcoin holdings to a market value of $474.4 million, positioning Semler among the top 13 publicly listed Bitcoin treasury companies, reports Cointelegraph.

The firm disclosed the buy in a May 23 filing, revealing an average purchase price of $109,801 per BTC.

Stock proceeds fund crypto pivot

To fund the acquisition, Semler Scientific sold about 3 million shares through an at-the-market equity offering, raising $115 million in net proceeds. Despite this strategic pivot, the company’s stock dipped 1.36% on the day of the announcement—broadly in line with the Nasdaq’s 1% decline.

The stock is still up 53% since Semler first revealed its Bitcoin strategy in May 2024, although it remains down 18% for the year, partly due to a 44% revenue drop in Q1 2025.

Bitcoin strategy echoes institutional trend

Semler’s approach mirrors that of firms like Michael Saylor’s Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which pioneered corporate Bitcoin accumulation in 2020. The move is seen as an alternative capital allocation strategy amid Bitcoin’s 181.6% year-to-date rise.

As traditional revenue channels falter, firms like Semler increasingly view Bitcoin as a treasury hedge, aiming to attract crypto-aligned investors while gaining exposure to potential long-term BTC appreciation.
