In 2024, Bitcoin reached several historic milestones, including surpassing the six-digit threshold, fueled by a broader crypto rally following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential elections. However, its surge to $100,000 was not the most remarkable achievement in the cryptocurrency market this year, as numerous altcoins and meme coins demonstrated even more impressive growth.
According to Forbes, Bitcoin, which grew by 47% since the elections, added approximately $1.2 trillion to its market capitalization in 2024. As of today, its price has corrected to $95,000.
The leader among cryptocurrencies with a market capitalization of over $5 billion was Pepe, a token inspired by the meme frog. It soared by 1,570%, making it the most successful asset of the year.
In second place was SUI, the native token of the Sui blockchain network, which gained 509%. Dogecoin, heavily promoted by entrepreneur Elon Musk in recent years, outperformed Bitcoin with a 333% rise, reaching levels not seen since the pandemic.
Ripple’s XRP token also outpaced Bitcoin, growing nearly 304% in 2024. Other notable performers included Stellar, which rose by 233%, and Toncoin, created by Telegram, which increased by 155%. Hedera's token surpassed them both with a 248% gain.
Even Shiba Inu-inspired tokens joined the rally: Shiba Inu and TRON’s TRONIX grew by 150% and 155%, respectively, slightly outperforming Bitcoin.
The year 2024 was transformative for the cryptocurrency market, where altcoins and meme coins achieved remarkable growth alongside Bitcoin’s record-breaking rise.
