In a landmark streak spanning 29 months, Australia has consistently added Bitcoin ATMs, solidifying its position as a global leader in crypto accessibility.

The nation now boasts 1,359 Bitcoin ATMs, representing 3.5% of the global total and placing it third worldwide, behind the United States and Canada.

Data from Coin ATM Radar reveals that Australia's ATM count is rapidly approaching Europe’s 1,660 machines. If this growth continues, Australia could soon surpass Europe, becoming home to the third-largest Bitcoin ATM network globally. These developments underscore Australia’s increasing prominence in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, despite its relatively modest share of the global ATM market.

North America’s crypto ATM dominance

The United States remains the clear leader in the Bitcoin ATM space, with 31,516 machines accounting for 81.3% of the global total. Canada follows with 3,027 ATMs, bringing North America’s combined share to over 90% of the world’s 38,753 Bitcoin ATMs. In contrast, Europe and Oceania each hold approximately 4% of the global market, with Asia trailing at just 0.9%.

As the global Bitcoin ATM network expands, so do concerns about misuse. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over $110 million lost to Bitcoin ATM-related scams in 2023, with fraudsters exploiting the anonymity and speed of transactions. In response, U.S. lawmakers have called on leading Bitcoin ATM operators to address vulnerabilities, particularly those targeting elderly users.

Australia’s sustained ATM growth reflects its commitment to fostering crypto adoption, but it also highlights the need for robust regulatory measures to ensure user safety. As the nation approaches a key milestone in surpassing Europe, the broader crypto industry must balance accessibility with security to sustain public trust.
