Bitcoin hashrate hits record 1,000 EH/s

Bitcoin hashrate hits record 1,000 EH/s Bitcoin hashrate hits record 1,000 EH/s

On January 3, Bitcoin’s hashrate — the total computing power securing its blockchain — briefly surpassed 1,000 exahashes per second (EH/s), a new all-time high, according to CoinWarz.

This figure represents nearly double the hashrate recorded in January 2024, when the network averaged 510 EH/s. The hashrate has since stabilized around 780 EH/s.

This milestone underscores the growing commitment of miners to Bitcoin’s network, as increased computational power strengthens blockchain security. Remarkably, this expansion comes despite the April 2024 halving, which reduced mining rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. Major mining companies like Riot Platforms and CleanSpark have mitigated halving-related pressures by expanding operations and accumulating Bitcoin on their balance sheets.

Institutional inflows drive momentum

The rising hashrate aligns with increasing institutional investment in Bitcoin. November 2024 saw Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) surpass $100 billion in net assets for the first time, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Financial firms, including Sygnum, project accelerated adoption by sovereign wealth funds, endowments, and pension funds in 2025.

JP Morgan’s December analysis highlighted miners’ strategies, including leveraging power assets and BTC holdings to drive value. Companies like Marathon, Riot, and CleanSpark collectively hold treasuries worth $4.4 billion, $1.7 billion, and $910 million, respectively, as per BitcoinTreasuries.net.

Sygnum’s Chief Clients Officer Martin Burgherr noted the potential for Bitcoin to gain recognition as a central bank reserve asset, which could catalyze further institutional participation.

The surge in Bitcoin’s hashrate signals robust growth and heightened security, key factors for institutional confidence. As regulatory clarity improves, 2025 could mark a pivotal year for Bitcoin, solidifying its role in traditional finance and beyond.

Meanwhile, the BlackRock Bitcoin ETF experiences its worst day.
