UK court puts an end to Satoshi Nakamoto controversy

Crypto podcast host Peter McCormack has said that his standoff with Craig Wright is over, as the UK Supreme Court has rejected Wright's latest appeal.

On his X (Twitter) page, McCormack wrote: "Permission to appeal was refused by three Supreme Court justices, Lord Briggs, Lady Rose, and Lord Richards, on the grounds that the appeal did not raise an arguable question of law."

Australian programmer and businessman Wright sued McCormack for defamation after the crypto podcast host denied Wright's claim that he was part of the team that created Bitcoin and the person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

Wright lost the legal battle to McCormack back in 2023, but only now has the UK Supreme Court put a stop to it.

"Five years of hell are behind us... but we got through it," McCormack said.

According to CoinGape, in a separate court filing, Wright made a settlement offer to members of the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) and other concerned parties who claim he is not the creator of Bitcoin. Although the offer was valid for seven days, it was rejected immediately upon receipt.

Attorney Preston Byrne sharply criticized Wright's intentions to create a Bitcoin SV fork to obtain Satoshi Nakamoto's coins and his subsequent call for a settlement with COPA, with a trial expected on February 5.

On January 24, COPA presented expert evidence that the documents offered by Wright are forgeries. COPA claims that the Bitcoin technical document was created in OpenOffice, not LaTeX, as Wright claims. In addition, the 2007 "time capsule" file was modified in 2023.

COPA also believes that Wright may have used ChatGPT to create forged documents.

It is publicly known that the account of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, who disappeared in 2011, contains about 1 million BTC coins, attracting a large number of people who want to get their hands on them.

At the time of writing, BTC is trading at $39,961.
