Vitalik Buterin plans to use AI to fix bugs in ETH code

Ethereum Co-Founder, Vitalik Buterin, said that he is ready to use artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to eliminate possible technical risks for Ethereum.

Vitalik Buterin wrote in X (Twitter) that bugs hidden deep in the code are the biggest technical risk for ETH.

He said that AI capabilities can be used for this purpose, as finding and fixing bugs in the code could be one of the most useful applications of AI, Cointelegraph reported.

Currently, the markets are awaiting the important Dencun upgrade of the Ethereum blockchain, which is scheduled to go live on the network on March 13. The Dencun hardfork is a major upgrade to Ethereum that has the potential to affect the blockchain on multiple levels. Dencun was tested on the Goerli network on January 17, but an identified bug in Prsym prevented its completion.

Upgrades to the Ethereum network are critical to the blockchain's long-term roadmap. According to Vitalik Buterin, even after numerous upgrades to the Ethereum blockchain, only 55% of the tasks have been completed. The upcoming Dencun (from the words "Deneb" and "Cancun") update is intended to improve the overall scalability and security of the network.

However, there may be difficulties with AI detecting bugs in Ethereum's code.

Interestingly, in July 2023, developers from OpenZeppelin already tried to use AI, specifically GPT-4 from OpenAI, to detect security issues in Solidity smart contracts, which are native to the Ethereum code. It turned out that GPT-4 successfully identified problems in 20 out of 28 tasks.

Where the AI was unable to detect errors, it was prompted to quickly fix them. At the same time, it turned out that the AI actually showed a vulnerability where there wasn't one.

Kang Lee, CertiK's Chief Security Officer, also expressed some concerns about this type of AI application. He stated that using AI to fix bugs in code or the coding process causes more security problems than it fixes.

Kang Lee stated that AI is best used only as an adjunct to experienced programmers, as they are capable of finding code bugs.

"I think ChatGPT is a great and useful tool for people who do code analysis and reverse engineering," Kang Lee said.

Buterin shared his prediction of the successful use of AI and the excellent prospects for it, although he previously warned developers to be cautious when using AI in blockchain technology. "It's important to be cautious, especially for those creating a prediction market or developing a stablecoin that uses an AI oracle. If security issues are discovered, a huge amount of money could disappear in an instant."
