Atari partners with Coinbase to bring Asteroids and Breakout to blockchain
Atari has partnered with Coinbase to bring its classic games to the blockchain. The initiative is part of Onchain Summer and Onchain Arcade, which aim to eliminate middlemen when proceeds from game sales go directly to the creators.
Tyler Drewitz, director of Atari Club and Atari X, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, citing Coinbase's extensive user base of over 100 million. Atari, which previously dabbled in blockchain under former CEO Fred Chesnais, revived its interest in 2022 with projects such as The Sandbox and Polycade, according to VentureBeat.
The Onchain Summer project allows players to compete on leaderboards and earn rewards such as Atari 2600+, merchandise, and game codes. This collaboration ensures a fair distribution of revenue to creators, increasing their control over their earnings.
Atari's embrace of blockchain technology aims to re-engage the gaming community, harkening back to its Atari Club roots. Drewitz emphasized that blockchain technology allows for better community engagement through competitive leaderboards and reward systems. This is Atari's second year of Onchain Summer, which continues to blend classic gaming with modern technology.
Users can now play and compete in Asteroids and Breakout by creating a cryptocurrency wallet and minting the game for $5. The Onchain Summer portal offers special mints and unique experiences to encourage users to explore the potential of blockchain.
Drewitz noted that Atari chose Asteroids and Breakout because of their accessibility and competitive appeal. He described the partnership as "blockchain light," with a focus on ease of use. Atari hopes to dispel the "wild west" image of Web3 by ensuring it is safe, fun, and easy to use.
Exclusive rewards, including the Atari 2600+, merch, game codes, and more, will be part of Atari's summer project reminiscent of the gaming era of the 1980s.
