With the Stellar network, tokens are not mined like they are with Bitcoin and many of the other altcoins. Instead, a set amount of lumens were created at the time of launch. A 1% annual increase in the number of tokens was observed up to 2019 when a community vote caused the supply of lumen to decline. Today, a total of 50 billion lumens exist. The team behind Stellar did report they are not planning to create any additional lumens in the future, but some of the tokens currently retained will be released into the open market in the future. The remaining lumens are currently retained by the Stellar Development Foundation. The primary purpose of the retained lumens is to assist in the promotion, as well as the development, of the Stellar platform.
