Germany’s DekaBank has received regulatory approval from the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) to provide cryptocurrency custody and trading services for institutional investors.

The move positions the $395 billion asset manager at the forefront of the country’s evolving digital asset landscape, according to Coingape.

The newly granted license under the German Banking Act enables DekaBank to securely store and facilitate cryptocurrency transactions while ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory standards.

As one of Germany’s largest financial institutions, DekaBank plays a key role in managing assets for Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, the country’s largest financial services network.

Strengthening institutional access to crypto

DekaBank’s foray into digital assets comes amid growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies. By offering regulated custody and trading solutions, the institution aims to provide a secure and compliant framework for investors seeking exposure to the asset class.

Martin K. Müller, a representative of DekaBank, emphasized the institution’s commitment to security, compliance, and innovation. “We have the necessary expertise, regulatory approval, and infrastructure to support our clients in navigating the digital asset space safely,” he said.

The approval marks a significant milestone in Germany’s financial sector, as traditional banking institutions increasingly embrace digital assets. Under the supervision of BaFin and the European Central Bank (ECB), DekaBank’s entry into crypto services is expected to enhance institutional adoption while reinforcing investor protection.

With this development, Germany continues to solidify its position as a key player in Europe’s regulated cryptocurrency market, bridging the gap between traditional finance and digital asset investment.

Meanwhile, Germany’s crypto portfolio highlights the intersection between government intervention and digital asset markets. While its Bitcoin reserves have played a role in shaping price movements and regulatory discourse, the long-term strategy remains uncertain.
