Trump wins support after GOP revolt over digital dollar ban
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he personally met with key Republican congressmen who had voted against recent crypto legislation — and successfully secured their support.
After the failure of the GENIUS Act vote, Trump met in the Oval Office with 11 of the 12 Republican representatives who opposed the bill to understand their concerns and persuade them to vote in favor of crypto-related legislation.
"After a short conversation, they all agreed to vote for the rule tomorrow morning," Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social.
What's the issue with the politicians and the crypto bills?
The GENIUS Act opponents, all Republicans, had voted against it because the bill lacked a clear ban on a Federal Reserve central bank digital currency (CBDC). Some lawmakers demanded that the three crypto bills be consolidated or that they be allowed to propose amendments to the GENIUS Act. Neither request was granted.
As a result, the bill on stablecoins was voted down by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and 12 fellow Republicans, including Andrew Clyde, Tim Burchett, Andy Biggs, Eli Crane, Michael Cloud, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Andy Harris, Anna Paulina Luna, Scott Perry, Victoria Spartz, Chip Roy, and Keith Self.
"I voted against the GENIUS Act procedure because it doesn’t prohibit a Federal Reserve digital dollar, and because Speaker Johnson didn’t allow us to introduce amendments," said Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Following Trump’s meeting with the dissenting Republicans, the next vote is expected to be more successful.
