The company's crypto platform, Bitfinex Alerts, was compromised by unknown hackers who gained access to part of the information base.
However, the crooks only obtained "partial, incomplete, and outdated" information, so the hack was not a potential threat to core systems, Bitfinex said.
The exchange stressed that users' funds are completely safe.
According to Bitfinex, fraudsters or a group of individuals gained access to the client support channel through a phishing attack. They were able to hack access to user support tools. However, the support channel contained mostly either empty or inactive user accounts, so the potential impact of the hack on active users was minimal.
In the midst of the security incident, Bitfinex emphasized its commitment to transparency and user protection. The company also intends to notify all affected users in order to maintain trust and accountability in the cryptocurrency community.
