Expert Advice

  • Check regulatory status and Tier-1 oversight
As a crypto expert, the first thing I look at is whether an exchange is regulated — and by whom. Exchanges supervised by Tier-1 authorities (for example major financial regulators in top jurisdictions) generally follow stricter rules, transparency requirements, and consumer-protection standards. Lack of Tier-1 oversight does not automatically mean unsafe operations, but it does increase counterparty risk: fewer mandatory audits, weaker capital/segregation requirements, and less robust supervision. For users who prioritise capital protection, prefer exchanges that clearly publish their licenses and explain what those licenses actually cover. If an exchange claims multiple licenses, verify them through regulator registries and note any limitations (e.g., only for payments, not custodial services).
