GMO-Z com Securities Review 2025

Updated:

Brief Look at GMO-Z com Securities

GMO-Z com Securities, a brokerage firm based in Thailand, was part of the Japanese financial holding company GMO Financial Holdings, Inc., which belongs to the larger GMO Internet Group. Since 2016, the company had provided securities trading services on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI).
In January 2025, GMO-Z com Securities announced the full termination of its business operations in Thailand. The decision came after financial difficulties linked to a November 2022 incident involving improper trading practices and the use of substitute securities as collateral for margin trading. This resulted in significant losses and the creation of reserves for doubtful accounts.
Despite efforts to improve risk management and stop new margin lending, the company continued to face losses. In December 2024, it decided to end margin trading services, followed by a January 2025 announcement of a complete shutdown and liquidation. The GMO-Z com Securities website is no longer accessible.
As of March 3, 2025, clients have been unable to deposit funds or transfer shares into their trading accounts. Accounts with zero balances have been closed, and as of May 2, 2025, clients can no longer purchase new securities through these accounts.

GMO-Z com Securities attracted me with its low fees and high reliability. While it only allows trading securities on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), I don't see this as a disadvantage. However, if you seek access to international markets, this wouldn't be the best choice for you.
Fees are low here. Available deposit and withdrawal methods are standard for Thailand. Also, the broker offers depositing funds through the ATMs of its bank partners.

GMO-Z com Securities offers trading in both large-cap stocks on the SET's main board and mid-cap stocks on the MAI. This variety, along with the availability of fractional share trading, initially drew me to the platform. Fractional shares offer the same trading conditions as whole shares, but with the benefit of lower upfront investment, making them a good option for beginners or those looking to diversify their portfolio. Withdrawing profits is conveniently done through mobile banking, and I typically receive the money the next business day.

I’ve traded with my own funds through this broker for several years, as I was a novice trader and didn’t know how to use margin. Last year I switched to the Credit Balance account. GMO-Z com Securities’ margin requirements of 7.95% per annum are more profitable than with other brokers. Withdrawals through bank transfers are not fast, but the money always comes.
