Initially developed as a mechanism for validating blockchain transactions, staking has evolved into a popular investment strategy that allows crypto holders to earn passive income while helping secure blockchain networks.

The rapid growth of staking has attracted retail investors, exchanges, custodians, and institutional market participants. At the same time, regulators and industry organizations emphasize that staking involves risks beyond traditional investments, including price volatility, liquidity constraints, validator failures, platform security, and regulatory uncertainty.

Against this backdrop, TU Research conducted a proprietary survey of 1,500 retail investors to examine how individuals perceive crypto staking. The study explores whether investors view staking as a reliable source of passive income, what motivates participation, which risks influence decision-making, and how retail perspectives compare with institutional research.

The research seeks to answer several key questions:

Findings

Based on TU Research, several important patterns emerge regarding retail investor attitudes toward crypto staking:

  • Crypto staking has already achieved broad retail adoption. 51% of respondents have previously staked cryptocurrency, including 34% who currently stake digital assets. Another 29% plan to start staking in the future, suggesting that participation is likely to continue growing as staking services become more accessible.

  • Passive income is the primary reason investors choose to stake. 46% of respondents identified earning staking rewards as their main motivation, compared with 19% who stake to support blockchain networks and 17% who view staking as a more efficient long-term holding strategy. This indicates that investors primarily perceive staking as an income-generating investment rather than a technical network function.

  • Market risk outweighs technical concerns. 39% of respondents identified cryptocurrency price volatility as the biggest risk associated with staking, ahead of platform security (24%), liquidity constraints (16%), regulatory uncertainty (13%), and slashing penalties (8%). Investors appear to be more concerned about the value of their assets than about validator-related risks.

  • Retail investors prefer sustainable returns over exceptionally high yields. The most attractive staking reward for respondents was 5–8% APY (38%), followed by 8–12% APY (29%). These results suggest that investors increasingly value realistic and sustainable returns instead of unusually high yields that may involve greater risk.

  • Centralized exchanges remain the preferred staking providers. 41% of respondents trust centralized cryptocurrency exchanges the most, while 27% prefer self-custodial staking and 18% choose liquid staking protocols. Ease of use and platform reputation appear to play a greater role than complete self-custody for most retail investors.

  • Trust and regulation will shape future staking adoption. Nearly half of respondents (48%) said clearer regulation would significantly increase their confidence in staking, while 46% consider staking a reliable source of passive income when using reputable platforms. These findings suggest that transparency, investor protection, and trusted service providers will be as important as staking rewards in driving future market growth.

However, regulators and international organizations emphasize that staking also introduces new operational, liquidity, and governance risks.

According to the 2026 Institutional Investor Digital Assets Survey conducted by EY-Parthenon for Coinbase Institutional, professional investors increasingly evaluate staking opportunities not only by expected rewards but also by regulatory certainty, custody quality, liquidity, and operational security. The findings suggest that confidence in the underlying infrastructure is becoming as important as potential investment returns.

Overall, institutional research suggests that staking is evolving from a purely technical blockchain function into an established component of the digital asset ecosystem. While Proof-of-Stake offers improved scalability and energy efficiency, its long-term adoption will depend on transparent regulation, secure infrastructure, effective risk management, and investor confidence rather than staking rewards alone.

To examine how retail investors evaluate crypto staking, we conducted an independent quantitative study focusing on investor experience, staking behaviour, perceived benefits, and risk assessment.

Although staking has become one of the most widely used mechanisms for generating yield in the cryptocurrency market, relatively little research has explored how individual investors actually perceive this investment strategy. Our survey addresses this gap by examining whether staking is primarily viewed as a reliable source of passive income or as an activity associated with substantial financial and operational risks.

The findings complement existing institutional and academic research by providing a retail investor perspective on staking adoption and the factors that influence participation.

Methodology

The research was conducted using an online quantitative survey (CAWI).
