Gram Wallet launch: Can Telegram bring crypto to the masses?
Why did Telegram launch a crypto wallet?

Gram Wallet is Telegram's latest push into cryptocurrency. The new self-custody wallet is expected to reach more than one billion users through the messaging app. Its success could reshape how people store and spend digital assets.

Why Gram Wallet matters

Telegram plans to launch Gram Wallet later this summer, integrating a native self-custody cryptocurrency wallet directly into its messaging app. Unlike Telegram's existing Wallet bot, which is operated by a third party, Gram Wallet will allow users to send, receive, and store digital assets while keeping control of their own private keys.

The announcement marks Telegram's biggest crypto push since reviving its blockchain ambitions around The Open Network (TON). According to founder Pavel Durov, the rollout will bring instant, zero-fee crypto transactions to Telegram users. GRAM rose about 7% following the announcement.

If successful, Gram Wallet could become one of the world's most widely distributed self-custody wallets, testing whether mainstream users are ready to manage their own crypto instead of relying on centralized platforms.

What is Gram Wallet?

Gram Wallet is Telegram's native cryptocurrency wallet, built to work with The Open Network (TON) blockchain. Instead of requiring users to download a separate application, it is designed to let them send, receive, and store cryptocurrency directly within Telegram, as well as interact with TON-based services.

One of its defining features is that it is non-custodial. Unlike wallets offered by many cryptocurrency exchanges, Gram Wallet does not hold users' private keys or control their funds. Instead, ownership remains entirely with the user.

That approach offers greater independence but also greater responsibility. While custodial services can often help recover access to an account, users of non-custodial wallets are responsible for safeguarding their recovery phrase. Losing it could mean permanently losing access to their cryptocurrency.

Why is Telegram betting on Gram?

Gram Wallet is Telegram's clearest effort yet to make blockchain technology part of the app's everyday experience rather than a niche feature for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Over the past few years, the company has gradually expanded its blockchain ecosystem through TON-powered Mini Apps, tokenized usernames, digital collectibles, and payment features.

The strategy dates back to 2018, when Telegram raised more than $1.7 billion for the Telegram Open Network and its Gram cryptocurrency. The project was abandoned after a legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which argued the token sale violated securities laws. Independent developers later continued building the blockchain under the name The Open Network (TON), now overseen by the TON Foundation.

With Gram Wallet, Telegram is reconnecting its messaging platform with that ecosystem while making blockchain technology accessible to ordinary users instead of limiting it to experienced crypto participants.

Who are Gram Wallet's competitors?

Gram Wallet enters a market dominated by established self-custody wallets such as MetaMask, Phantom, and Trust Wallet. Those apps have spent years building loyal communities, particularly among active cryptocurrency users.

Telegram's advantage, however, is not necessarily technology but distribution. Most crypto wallets require users to download a separate application before they can buy, send, or store digital assets. Gram Wallet, by contrast, will already be available inside an app that people use every day.

Telegram is also part of a broader race to turn digital platforms into financial ecosystems. China's WeChat combines messaging with payments and shopping, while Elon Musk has said he wants X to become an "everything app," with X Money serving as its built-in payments platform.

More than just another wallet

For years, one of cryptocurrency's biggest barriers to mainstream adoption has been complexity. Setting up a wallet, safeguarding recovery phrases, and managing private keys remain intimidating for many first-time users.

Gram Wallet aims to reduce that friction by embedding self-custody into an app that people already know how to use. Rather than convincing users to learn an entirely new platform, Telegram is betting that familiar software can make cryptocurrency easier to access.

Whether users embrace the responsibility of self-custody remains uncertain. But if Telegram succeeds, the world's largest crypto wallet may not be the one with the most advanced technology. It may simply be the one people never had to download in the first place.
