Hawaiian Electric closes Waikiki lane

Hawaiian Electric will close the westbound lane along Kuhio Avenue between Lewers and Kaiolu streets in Waikiki from Monday 4/6 to Wednesday 4/9 to replace and upgrade underground cables.

Work will occur daily from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parking will be restricted on both sides of Kaiolu Street and the single travel lane will be narrowed in the construction area. The company advises residents and drivers to anticipate traffic impacts during the scheduled maintenance period.

Hawaiian Electric previously warned that dangerous weather could delay outage repairs on Oahu, citing potential infrastructure damage needing rebuilding here. The company has also reported achieving a 37 percent renewable portfolio standard in 2025 as it works toward a 2030 target here. These developments come as the utility continues scheduled upgrades and maintenance projects on the island.
