VIASAT INC has introduced direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity over its highly reliable L-band satellite network, using 3GPP non-terrestrial network (NTN) standards on a standard commercial Android smartphone.
This milestone, described as a first for the country, was achieved in partnership with Digital Uzbekistan, UZ-SAT, and Uztelecom and announced at the GSMA M360 Eurasia event. The deployment leverages technology that enables connectivity even in remote areas, advancing mobile accessibility and digital inclusion. Market observers consider this move a strategic step in expanding the reach of satellite-enabled mobile services.
Viasat has previously joined Telebrasbr Conectada in Brasília to support digital inclusion and multi-orbit connectivity in Latin America, according to a company statement. In addition, Viasat partnered with L2Aviation to develop avionics for uncrewed and advanced air mobility through its Velaris ecosystem, as announced earlier this year here. These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to expand the company’s technology offerings across different sectors and regions.
