Replit shifts AI partners

Replit is changing the model providers behind its AI coding platform as it pushes deeper into enterprise and B2B revenue. CEO Amjad Masad says the company no longer works with Anthropic, citing cost, partnership terms and performance, although people familiar with the relationship dispute that the tie-up has fully ended.

Highlights

  • Replit ended its partnership with Anthropic, citing cost and performance reasons, and now favors OpenAI as its main AI model provider.
  • Enterprise customers now account for about 15% of Replit's revenue in 2024, up from 2% last year, with B2B exceeding 50% of total revenue.
  • Masad highlighted that secure AI agent deployment—including error recovery, security, and identity controls—is essential for broader enterprise adoption.

Model choice and partnership questions

As reported by TechCrunch, Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday that Replit is no longer working with Anthropic, a notable change for the AI coding platform because Claude models had powered parts of its service under the companies' earlier partnership.

Masad says the decision reflects several factors, including cost and comparative performance. He says Replit relies on internal benchmarking and also publishes a public benchmark, adding that the company's Sol and Astra systems perform better at building vibe-coded applications from scratch and that OpenAI is the better partner for now.

Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there had been no earlier indication in the text that its relationship with Anthropic had ended. Replit sells a cloud-based software development platform that lets users build and deploy applications directly from a browser, and its work with Anthropic had been described as helping drive significant revenue growth.

Masad's comments are drawing skepticism from people familiar with the arrangement. One person familiar with the partnership, who asked not to be named, says the relationship is still in place, and a September blog post cited Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 as models running in Replit Agent's production environment.

TechCrunch says it contacted Replit again for clarification and plans to update its story if the company responds.

Enterprise revenue gains and safety focus

Alongside the partnership remarks, Masad says enterprise customers are becoming a much larger part of Replit's business mix. He says enterprise accounted for about 2% of revenue last year, compared with about 15% this year, while more than 50% of total revenue now comes from B2B activity.

The shift suggests Replit is broadening beyond its developer and startup base as companies look for browser-based tools that can accelerate software creation with AI assistance. A move toward providers that offer stronger economics or better task performance could become more important as enterprise usage grows and model costs remain under pressure.

Masad also emphasizes that AI agents need a secure operating environment to work effectively. He says safe deployment depends on orchestration, error recovery, security, sandboxing, networking, identity and authorization, framing those controls as necessary infrastructure for wider enterprise adoption.

Our earlier report on the Bank of England’s push for “bare metal” recovery planning explained how regulators are urging banks to prepare independent fallback systems to keep critical services running if a cyberattack compromises primary technology. The article highlighted warnings that AI is increasing the scale and complexity of cyber threats, prompting supervisors to demand stronger end-to-end resilience and recovery capabilities across the financial system.
