Restructure leads to administration
As reported by ABC News, Essential Caravans appointed administrators on October 21 after a restructure that closed its factory in Somerton, in Melbourne's outer north, and consolidated operations with sister company Design RV in Pakenham.Jamie Johnson, director of both companies, says economic conditions could not sustain two Melbourne-based factories. A spokesperson for Essential Caravans says 92 employees are directly affected by the restructure, with 12 workers choosing to move into roles at the Pakenham site.
The company says it intends to fulfil all current orders, while administrators and managers review caravan builds and delivery schedules to minimise disruption for buyers and dealership partners. Johnson says he is fully committed to ensuring customers are not affected by the administration process.
Industry strain across Victoria
Essential Caravans has built more than 5,000 caravans since 2015, according to its website, and moved into its Somerton factory in 2021.The company's administration adds to pressure across Australia's caravan industry, where several manufacturers have collapsed in recent years. Caravan Industry Victoria says more than 90 per cent of the nation's caravans and RVs are produced in Victoria, and its latest State of the Industry Statement says the sector is navigating a significant period of economic and structural change.
The industry body says more Australian businesses are entering administration or ceasing to trade, while international imports are up 16 per cent from the previous year.
