SEC unveils new enforcement team to protect investors from crypto fraud
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the creation of the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU), a new enforcement division aimed at tackling misconduct in digital markets.
The unit, led by Laura D’Allaird, will focus on fraud related to cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies. The 30-member team replaces the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit, reflecting the SEC’s intensified approach to regulating digital finance, according to Coingape.
SEC Acting Chairman Mark T. Uyeda said that CETU’s mission extends beyond enforcement, seeking to promote innovation while ensuring investor protection. “The unit will not only protect investors but will also facilitate capital formation and market efficiency by clearing the way for innovation to grow,” Uyeda stated.
A tougher stance on cyber fraud
CETU will collaborate with other regulatory bodies, including the Crypto Task Force led by SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce. The unit’s priorities include identifying deceptive AI applications in trading, monitoring blockchain-based scams, and enforcing cybersecurity compliance for regulated financial entities.
The SEC has been increasing its scrutiny of crypto markets, citing concerns over fraud, market manipulation, and insufficient investor safeguards. The formation of CETU underscores the agency’s commitment to closing regulatory gaps in the fast-evolving digital economy.
With artificial intelligence and blockchain technology becoming central to financial markets, regulators worldwide are ramping up efforts to prevent misuse. CETU’s launch signals the SEC’s determination to stay ahead of emerging threats, reinforcing its role as a key watchdog in the era of digital finance.
Recently, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has instituted a significant procedural shift that requires its enforcement staff to seek approval from the Commission before formally launching investigations.
