Vitalik Buterin presents near term vision for Ethereum and AI
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared an updated vision for how artificial intelligence and blockchain technology could converge in practical, near-term applications. Rather than focusing on abstract ideas of artificial general intelligence (AGI), Buterin argues that Ethereum can serve as a foundational layer for decentralized, privacy-preserving AI systems.
His latest commentary emphasizes human empowerment, economic coordination between AI agents, and improved onchain governance. Buterin frames Ethereum not as a solution to AGI itself, but as a critical infrastructure that can shape how AI develops and interacts with society.
Ethereum as an economic layer for AI agents
One of the central pillars of Buterin’s vision is Ethereum becoming an economic coordination layer for AI-to-AI interactions. He argues that decentralized economies allow AI systems to interact without relying on centralized authorities, enabling more resilient and open architectures.
Ethereum could support use cases such as API calls, bot-to-bot hiring, and security deposits, potentially backed by onchain dispute resolution. Standards like ERC-8004 are designed to support AI reputation and decentralized authorization, allowing autonomous agents to transact in a trust-minimized way.
“Economies not for the sake of economies, but to enable more decentralized authority,” Buterin said.
This approach reflects a broader belief that economic incentives are essential for scaling decentralized AI, rather than relying on coordination within a single organization.
Privacy, verification, and the “Mountain Man” ideal
Buterin has repeatedly stressed that privacy is one of the biggest challenges facing modern AI. Large language models have already raised concerns about data leakage, with legal experts warning that AI chat logs may be subpoenaed in court proceedings.
To address this, he advocates for local LLM tooling, zero-knowledge payments for API calls, cryptographic verification, and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) attestations. These tools could allow users to interact with AI systems without exposing persistent identities.
“Basically, take the vision that cypherpunk radicals have always dreamed of (don't trust; verify everything), that has been nonviable in reality because humans are never actually going to verify all the code ourselves. Now, we can finally make that vision happen, with LLMs doing the hard part,” he said.
Scaling governance and human judgment with AI
Beyond infrastructure, Buterin believes AI can fundamentally improve markets and governance by overcoming human cognitive limits. Prediction markets, quadratic voting, and decentralized governance models have historically struggled due to attention constraints.
“Prediction and decision markets, decentralized governance, quadratic voting, combinatorial auctions… are all beautiful in theory,” Buterin noted, but limited by human decision-making capacity.
LLMs, he argues, could scale judgment and analysis, making these systems viable at last.
