Coinbase launches agentic wallets for autonomous AI agents
Coinbase has launched “Agentic Wallets,” the first wallet infrastructure specifically designed for autonomous AI agents, enabling bots to independently store funds, send payments, trade tokens, earn yield, and execute blockchain transactions with built-in security mechanisms.
Agentic Wallets are based on the x402 protocol, which Coinbase is developing alongside other internet stakeholders to support autonomous crypto payments “without human intervention,” as interest in artificial intelligence continues to grow.
“Does your agent discover a better yield opportunity at 3 a.m.? It automatically rebalances the portfolio — no approval required, because you’ve already set permissions and governance parameters,” explained Eric Reppel and Josh Nickerson, developers at the Coinbase Developer Platform.
Agentic Wallets will initially support EVM-compatible blockchains and Solana, and will also enable gasless transactions on Coinbase’s Layer 2 base network.
Security comes first
The wallets feature a command-line interface that allows users to verify their agents, fund wallets, and “deploy new skills with simple commands.” The team has also released an agent-wallet-skills repository to provide agents with basic operational commands.
Security mechanisms include programmable spending limits, session restrictions, and additional transaction controls. Developers also emphasized that private keys remain within Coinbase’s secure infrastructure and are never exposed to agent prompts or large language models (LLMs).
The x402 protocol, named after the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code that was proposed but never implemented, has processed 50 million transactions since its launch last year. In December, Coinbase released version 2.0 of the open-source protocol, expanding support for “legacy payment systems.”
In September, Cloudflare and Coinbase jointly launched the x402 Foundation to promote adoption of the protocol. Coinbase’s developer platform recently also introduced Payments MCP, a protocol enabling large language models such as Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini to access blockchain wallets.
