Coinbase stock drop as platform faces extended AWS-related downtime
Coinbase suffers major outage after AWS failure

Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States, experienced a significant service disruption lasting more than two hours on Friday due to a failure in Amazon Web Services infrastructure. The outage affected thousands of users worldwide and led to a notable decline in platform performance.

Highlights

  • Coinbase faced a major outage lasting over two hours due to an AWS failure.
  • Trading operations were significantly restricted.
  • Coinbase shares fell 2.53% to $192.96 following the incident.
  • The outage came after the release of weaker-than-expected financial results.

Cause and impact of the outage

The disruption originated from issues in the use1-az4 availability zone within AWS’s US-EAST-1 region, triggered by elevated temperatures affecting equipment. Coinbase stated it was gradually restoring operations by first moving all markets to “cancel-only” mode before resuming full trading.

The incident occurred shortly after the company released quarterly financial results that fell short of analysts’ expectations.

In response, Coinbase shares (COIN) on NASDAQ dropped 2.53% to $192.96.

Reliance on cloud infrastructure

Like many other major crypto platforms, Coinbase relies heavily on Amazon Web Services for its operations.

Such outages highlight the risks of depending on a single cloud provider, particularly during periods of high market volatility when platform reliability is critical.

Risks of centralized infrastructure in crypto trading

The Coinbase outage once again exposed the vulnerability of even the largest centralized cryptocurrency platforms to third-party cloud service disruptions.

Despite growing trading volumes and institutional interest in digital assets, these incidents serve as a reminder that technical resilience remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges.

Market participants are increasingly calling for greater infrastructure diversification and improved fault tolerance among leading exchanges.
