Metaplanet overtakes El Salvador in Bitcoin holdings
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has surpassed El Salvador in bitcoin holdings, acquiring an additional 1,241 BTC for approximately $126.7 million at an average price of $102,119 per Bitcoin.
The Tokyo-listed firm now holds 6,796 BTC, valued at around $706.7 million based on current market prices, reports The Block.
Metaplanet began its bitcoin acquisition strategy in April 2024 and plans to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.
Metaplanet strengthens bitcoin strategy with new bond issuance
To finance its bitcoin purchases, Metaplanet has relied on bond sales, including a recent $21.25 million issuance announced Friday. This marks the firm’s 14th ordinary bond issuance, as it continues to expand its BTC holdings amid rising institutional interest in digital assets.
Despite the recent acquisition, Metaplanet still trails major corporate bitcoin holders like Strategy, which remains the largest with 555,450 BTC.
Market impact and future outlook
Metaplanet’s latest purchase underscores its aggressive approach to bitcoin accumulation, positioning the firm as the largest publicly listed bitcoin holder in Asia and 11th globally, per Bitcointreasuries.net. El Salvador, which began its bitcoin journey in 2021, currently holds 6,174 BTC. Metaplanet shares rose 3.82% in Monday trading in Japan, reflecting investor optimism around its ongoing bitcoin strategy.
