Ethereum Foundation announces zkEVM upgrade as ETH hits $3,000
Ethereum crossed the $3,000 mark following a 24-hour gain of 7.1%, driven by a combination of strong market sentiment and institutional demand for spot ETFs.
According to Ethereum Foundation blog post published on July 10, the company is preparing to deploy a native Layer 1 zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) within the next year — a move that could redefine Ethereum’s architecture and scaling strategy.
During the rally, trading volume surged to over 1.2 million ETH, and Ethereum ETF inflows exceeded $320 million since July 7. Notably, BlackRock’s ETHA ETF captured $206.57 million in net inflows on July 9 alone, with a market cap topping $5.06 billion.
What the zkEVM roadmap includes
The foundation’s roadmap includes building support for validators to run zero-knowledge clients, capable of verifying multiple ZK proofs without re-executing blocks. According to Ethereum researcher Sophia Gold, the system targets key performance benchmarks:
• Proof generation latency under 10 seconds
• Proof sizes below 300 KiB
• Security threshold of 128-bit encryption
The integration of zkEVM at the Layer 1 level marks a significant departure from current reliance on Layer 2 rollups. It also raises strategic questions for existing Layer 2 projects, many of which may now need to reposition in response to Ethereum's direct ZK proof adoption.
Implications for traders and developers
For traders, the roadmap signals a clear bullish shift in Ethereum’s long-term scalability and security, potentially improving network efficiency and reducing fees. Coupled with robust ETF inflows and increasing institutional demand, ETH’s recent price performance may reflect broader confidence in Ethereum’s evolving role as a ZK-native protocol.
Analysts now watch closely how Layer 2 ecosystems react and whether Ethereum can deliver on its real-time proofing promises in the next 12 months.
