Gemini switches Zcash node software ahead of NU7 network upgrade
Zcash infrastructure changes are drawing closer as the network prepares for a planned cut in block times to 25 seconds from 75. Gemini says it has replaced the software running its Zcash systems with Zakura, a move that could reduce downtime if its node falls behind or needs to be rebuilt.
Highlights
- Gemini switched from Zebra to Zakura node software for Zcash, reducing catch-up time to just over six hours versus nearly a day previously.
- Zakura's sync performance shows a rebuild in four hours and 20 minutes versus nearly 21 hours for Zebra, with recent data backups enabling 680 times faster machine replacement.
- Zcash's NU7 network upgrade, targeting Nov. 5 activation, will triple block verification frequency, with uncertainty around Zakura's sustained performance under the new 25-second block schedule.
Zcash node overhaul before faster blocks
As reported by CoinDesk, Gemini says Zakura caught up with the latest Zcash block in a little over six hours during its deployments, compared with close to a day for Zebra, the software it used previously. The exchange is making the change before Zcash's proposed NU7 upgrade, which would require network-following computers to receive and verify new blocks three times as often. That catch-up time measures how quickly a machine can rebuild its view of the blockchain after starting from behind. Zakura's developers also publish a separate test showing a sync time of four hours and 20 minutes, versus nearly 21 hours for Zebra, and say a saved copy of recent network data can bring a replacement machine online about 680 times faster than a standard sync.
For exchanges listing ZEC, node performance directly affects customer operations. A deposit sent to Gemini is not immediately tradable because the exchange's system must first detect and verify the payment on Zcash before crediting the account.
Operational stakes for exchanges and NU7 timeline
If a node crashes or falls behind, customers' coins can arrive while their balances remain uncredited, and exchanges typically pause deposits and withdrawals for that token until the system catches up. The speed at which a replacement machine can rebuild its copy of the network therefore plays a major role in how long any service interruption lasts.Gemini, controlled by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, is making the software shift as Zcash developers target Nov. 5 for NU7's mainnet activation. The upgrade is scheduled to reach Zcash's test network on Oct. 6, and developers plan to decide on the Nov. 5 launch after reviewing those results.
Gemini has not published a test showing how its new setup performs under NU7's faster block schedule. That leaves open how Zakura will handle sustained 25-second block production once the upgrade moves beyond testing.
Our earlier coverage of growing pushback against AI data centers in the U.S. explained how major tech and infrastructure players began rolling out “community principles” to address local concerns about energy costs, water use, and tangible benefits such as funding for schools and hospitals. The piece also noted that political pressure is rising, with communities pursuing restrictions and lawmakers considering measures that would shift more of the energy-cost burden onto AI companies.
