ENS seeks DAO approval to activate upgraded Ethereum naming system
Ethereum Name Service is moving toward a mainnet transition that would shift new .eth registrations to an upgraded protocol if token holders approve the plan. The proposal would temporarily halt new registrations during the cutover while preserving renewals and normal operation for existing domain owners.
Highlights
- ENS founder Nick Johnson submitted a draft proposal to activate ENSv2 on Ethereum mainnet, requiring DAO approval and onchain voting before execution.
- If passed, new .eth registrations will pause for several hours as domains synchronize to the upgraded system, while existing holders can still renew their names.
- ENSv2 introduces a redesigned registry for flexible domain management, after which ENS Labs will transfer contract control to the DAO, with non-mandatory migration for current holders.
Upgrade plan and DAO voting process
As reported by Cointelegraph, ENS founder Nick Johnson has submitted an executable draft proposal to activate ENSv2 on the Ethereum mainnet. The plan seeks approval from the protocol's decentralized autonomous organization and remains at the draft stage until it advances to an onchain vote.If approved, the upgrade freezes new registrations on the original ENS registrar while existing holders continue renewing their names. New .eth registrations would move to the upgraded system after domain records have been synchronized, although Johnson says new registrations would be unavailable on either version for several hours during the transition.
Under ENS governance rules, executable proposals require at least 1% voter participation, equal to 1 million ENS votes, and majority approval during a seven-day voting period. The proposal would also face a minimum two-day timelock before execution, and a voting date has not yet been announced.
Protocol changes and user impact
The upgraded system introduces a redesigned registry architecture intended to provide more flexible domain management and permissions. After activation, ENS Labs plans to transfer its remaining administrative control over the upgraded contracts to the DAO.Existing domain holders are not required to migrate, and their names continue functioning normally under the proposal. ENS Labs has also reserved existing .eth names for current owners on the upgraded system, allowing users to migrate when they are ready.
