Crypto markets face nearly $1 billion in liquidations as bitcoin, ether and XRP slide
Crypto faces $1B wipeout

Volatility is intensifying across digital asset markets as traders cut risk ahead of the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. Ether is absorbing the biggest share of the forced unwinds, falling about twice as much as bitcoin while weakness spreads to XRP, Solana and other tokens.

Highlights

  • Crypto markets face nearly $1 billion in liquidations as rate uncertainty triggers $483 million in bitcoin and ether futures closures within 24 hours.
  • Ether contracts see $286 million in liquidations, surpassing bitcoin’s $197 million despite ether’s smaller $30 billion futures market versus bitcoin’s $52 billion.
  • Ether drops 6.4% to $2,356, bitcoin falls 3.2% to $81,000, and Solana’s SOL, XRP, and Zcash post declines of 5.5%, 5%, and 13%, respectively.

Liquidations deepen as rate uncertainty hits trading

As reported by CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, roughly $483 million in bitcoin and ether futures positions are liquidated over 24 hours during Asian morning trading as uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next move weighs on sentiment. Ether contracts account for about $286 million of those closures, compared with $197 million for bitcoin.

Ether falls about 6.4% to roughly $2,356, while bitcoin loses around 3.2% to trade near $81,000. XRP and Solana’s SOL decline about 5%, dogecoin drops roughly 6%, and losses also extend to smaller tokens including Zcash.

Liquidations occur when leveraged traders no longer have enough collateral to keep positions open after prices move against them. Exchanges then close those trades automatically, a process that can accelerate market declines as positions are forced out regardless of the price.

Ether bears the brunt across crypto derivatives

Ether’s liquidation total is larger even though its futures market remains considerably smaller than bitcoin’s. Outstanding ether contracts total about $30 billion, compared with roughly $52 billion for bitcoin, indicating a heavier relative impact on ether-linked positioning.

The liquidation figures reflect the value of positions closed rather than the direct cash loss borne by individual traders. Beyond the two biggest cryptocurrencies, Solana futures record about $31 million in liquidations as SOL falls roughly 5.5%, while Zcash contracts add nearly $19 million with ZEC down about 13%.

In our earlier article on Mary Daly’s comments on the Fed’s rate outlook, we noted that policymakers still leaned toward additional tightening to bring inflation down, even if an immediate move at the late-October meeting did not look urgent. We also highlighted how the debate was shifting from whether rates need to rise again to when incoming data would justify it—keeping markets focused on an uncertain interest-rate path.
