Blockchain researcher Bitrace has outlined the three most popular hacking methods that hackers use to gain access to wallets. According to their findings, there are three such fraudulent schemes: through search engines, transaction hijacking, and liquidity fraud.
Crypto investors whose wallets have been hacked often find that they have recently updated crypto applications from unverified sources. Attackers use search engine optimization techniques to boost their rankings on search engines, especially Google and Bing, forcing users to download fake applications with backdoors.
Transaction hijacking is the process of automatically capturing or modifying previously copied text data from the clipboard. This method works as a readout of user data, which can later be used to access wallets and withdraw funds. For example, there is a known case where a fake Telegram application was used to replace a destination wallet address on the clipboard. The funds then went directly to the hacker's wallet.
The third common method is the classic "high return, low risk" liquidity scam. Investigators often find the hacker's address by tracing the source of transaction fees paid to move stolen funds.
Ways investors can improve their chances of recovering stolen funds include using blockchain watchers and professional tools.
