Ethereum powers public sector

Public institutions are relying more heavily on cross-border digital systems, raising questions not only about interoperability but also about control of the infrastructure behind them. The Ethereum Foundation is launching a new website that presents Ethereum as a neutral, open-source option for digital public infrastructure aimed at governments, NGOs, and multilateral organizations.

Highlights

  • Ethereum Foundation launched a public sector website providing resources and case studies for institutions considering Ethereum for digital public infrastructure.
  • The Bhutan National Digital Identity system uses Ethereum to enable users to hold credentials in NDI Wallets, supporting decentralized verification without centralized storage.
  • Ethereum Foundation's Technical Foundations team created a humanitarian proof of concept combining decentralized identity and private payments for aid coordination without broad record sharing.

Public sector website outlines sovereignty-focused use cases

As outlined by Ethereum Foundation Blog, citing the Ethereum Foundation, the new public sector website gathers explanations, implementation case studies, and practical resources for institutions evaluating Ethereum for public-interest services. The initiative argues that Ethereum's value for digital public infrastructure lies in its status as a shared network that no single organization controls, allowing participants to verify records independently and choose how they connect to the system.

The foundation says this model can reduce dependence on a single operator when multiple institutions need to collaborate over long timeframes. For public services that must last beyond procurement contracts or political cycles, that structure is presented as a way to preserve institutional autonomy while still enabling shared digital workflows.

The website also emphasizes individual data control. In the foundation's framing, applications built on Ethereum can let people hold their own digital credentials and decide what information to disclose, while institutions verify authenticity without publishing underlying personal data on the network.

Bhutan identity project and humanitarian work illustrate potential impact

One example highlighted is Bhutan's National Digital Identity system, which supports remote identity verification for communities that may face long and costly journeys to access services in person. Under that model, individuals hold credentials in their own NDI Wallets, while a shared registry on Ethereum helps participating services verify those credentials without storing them in a centralized government database.

The foundation says Bhutanese institutions still determine which organizations can issue trusted credentials, while users retain greater control over personal information. That example is used to support the broader case that shared infrastructure does not need to require centralized control over records or access.

A second use case focuses on humanitarian assistance, where organizations serving overlapping populations need to coordinate aid without broadly sharing sensitive records. The Ethereum Foundation's Technical Foundations team has developed a proof of concept that combines decentralized identity and private payment mechanisms, with a related article series examining the design, lessons, and future development paths.

Cohere’s planned acquisition of AISLE highlighted a push to strengthen AI-driven cybersecurity for enterprise and public sector customers alongside its tie-up with Germany’s Aleph Alpha. Our earlier report noted that AISLE’s vulnerability-detection tools aim to improve threat and bug discovery in widely used software, supporting private deployments on customers’ own systems as the combined group expands its European footprint.
