Sandbox confirms layoffs amid AI-driven restructuring
Sandbox explores AI tools to accelerate content and LiveOps

The Sandbox, the metaverse subsidiary of Animoca Brands, is undergoing a major restructuring of its operations.

Co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget are transitioning into new roles—Madrid moving from CEO to chairman and Borget stepping in as global ambassador, reports Cointelegraph.

While stepping away from day-to-day leadership, both founders remain engaged with the ecosystem and are expected to announce new strategic initiatives later this year. Their transition is part of broader business optimization measures aimed at strengthening The Sandbox’s long-term positioning.

Layoffs tied to AI and operational efficiency

The restructuring includes staff reductions, though the exact number of layoffs has not been disclosed. Reports had previously suggested that as many as 50% of employees could be cut, though The Sandbox has not confirmed this figure. Borget emphasized that the decision was driven by AI advancements in gaming, which allow faster deployment of content, features, and LiveOps with smaller teams.

He added that while layoffs are difficult, they are a necessary adaptation to ensure agility, efficiency, and sustainability. The company will also integrate more resources directly from Animoca Brands to streamline operations.

Token economy and future initiatives

Despite rumors about shifting priorities, Borget confirmed that The Sandbox’s core assets remain intact, including the $SAND token, LANDs, and NFTs within its ecosystem. However, reports suggest that the platform could soon launch a memecoin launchpad on Coinbase’s Base network, inspired by Solana’s Pump.fun.

The SAND token itself has struggled, losing 70% of its value since late 2024 and trading at $0.28—a steep drop from its all-time high of $8.40 in 2021. Still, The Sandbox aims to empower creators and expand its token economy, with future announcements likely to clarify its direction amid an evolving metaverse and Web3 landscape.
