Galaxy Digital becomes first public company to tokenize own shares
Galaxy Digital has become the first publicly traded company to tokenize its own shares. Mike Novogratz’s firm announced a partnership with Superstate that will enable investors to tokenize and store the company’s shares on the blockchain, as well as trade them at any time.
Until now, most tokenized stocks have been issued without the direct involvement of publicly traded companies. Galaxy Digital is the first to take the step of tokenizing its own shares.
GLXY shares will be available on Superstate’s Opening Bell platform on Solana. Moreover, tokenized shares will be tradable on the Solana blockchain 24/7, offering near-instant settlement.
“We’re proud to partner with Superstate to help lay the foundation for a blockchain-based capital market that bridges traditional equities with next-generation infrastructure,” said Mike Novogratz, Galaxy’s founder and CEO.
Truly tokenized shares for the first time
Unlike tokenized stocks previously issued by third parties—often without the participation of the companies involved—Galaxy’s tokenized shares are directly tied to its shareholder registry. This means token holders have actual ownership rights, including voting and dividend entitlements.
“This is the first instance of a Nasdaq-listed company tokenizing itself on a major public blockchain. Whenever token ownership changes, Galaxy’s shareholder registry is updated in real time,” said Robert Leshner, CEO of Superstate.
Rachel Levitan Keidan, Senior Director of Strategy and External Communications at Superstate, told crypto.news that Solana was chosen for its investor reach, high throughput, and speed—ideal for modern capital markets. Similar initiatives will soon launch on other major blockchains through Opening Bell.
