UNDP to teach blockchain and AI to governments via new 2026 academy

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is preparing to launch a Government Blockchain Academy in partnership with the Exponential Science Foundation, a nonprofit focused on blockchain and AI advocacy.

The academy, set to debut in 2026, will provide governments with specialized education on blockchain, AI, and emerging technologies, reports Cointelegraph.

The initiative aims to help public sector institutions move from experimentation to implementation, enhancing transparency, inclusion, and resilience. Developing countries such as India, Pakistan, and Vietnam, which ranked among the top adopters of crypto this year, are expected to benefit significantly from the program’s rollout.

Focus on financial services, digital identity, and transparency

According to UNDP, the academy’s curriculum will guide governments in deploying blockchain to tackle pressing challenges such as access to financial services and digital payments. A major focus will be on creating verifiable digital credentials, allowing citizens improved access to essential services through trusted identity systems.

Other use cases include tamper-resistant recordkeeping for anti-corruption measures, blockchain-enabled procurement tracking, and tokenized climate finance initiatives like monitoring carbon credits. Irena Cerovic, UNDP’s team leader for Europe and Central Asia, emphasized that the program would allow governments to approach complex issues with new tools that foster sustainable development.

Expanding on previous blockchain initiatives

The upcoming Government Blockchain Academy builds on UNDP’s earlier efforts, including a 2023 partnership with the Algorand Foundation to train 22,000 UNDP staff on blockchain applications for sustainable growth. That initiative created the foundation for using distributed ledger technology in development contexts. The new academy will go further by offering in-person, online, and forum-based teaching, giving governments structured support to build high-impact blockchain initiatives aligned with national priorities. By scaling beyond internal training to direct engagement with states, the UNDP is signaling a stronger push to integrate blockchain into global development strategies.

Recently we wrote that the stock prices of publicly traded companies that hold cryptocurrency on their balance sheets as digital treasury assets (DATs) have sharply fallen in recent weeks, raising concerns about their sustainability.
