Capital outflows persist amid RBI actions and intervention signals

The Reserve Bank of India implemented a series of steps to stabilize the rupee amid headwinds from higher oil prices and ongoing foreign capital outflows. Actions included opening a special US dollar window for state-run oil firms, tightening foreign exchange derivatives rules, and imposing new FX risk reserve requirements on large transactions. Statements from RBI officials highlighted readiness for further currency market intervention, accompanied by continued foreign investor withdrawals from Indian equities. Structural economic factors were also noted as contributing to the rupee's performance against major currencies, including Pound Sterling, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees mounting selling pressure on GBP/INR as a direct result of RBI's forceful interventions and persistent foreign investor outflows. He notes the sustained break below key moving averages and negative momentum readings, emphasizing a technical landscape dominated by sellers. RBI’s measures have not reversed sentiment, and fundamental challenges keep the rupee under chronic stress. Kharitonov remains skeptical about a near-term turnaround, given the negative oscillator signals and lack of clear demand from foreign participants. "The current profile favors more downside — risk is high and any buying could face immediate headwinds," warns Kharitonov.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, believes that RBI’s decisive policy actions show strong commitment to rupee stability despite recent pressure. He highlights that the bullish structure remains intact on a larger timeframe, with MA-50 above MA-200 and key support levels holding so far. While recent selling persists, Karapetjanc sees opportunity for position traders as the volatility band offers clear risk parameters. He is confident that any move above ₹125.565 could revive momentum toward the upper consolidation range. "Traders should watch for a breakout — these interventions create setups for further growth once a reversal signal emerges," says Karapetjanc.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, views GBP/INR as approaching oversold conditions on technical readings, yet momentum remains negative. He notes macro drivers, such as RBI support and external capital flows, will be crucial for dictating the next move. Mehta suggests tactical traders should watch for a potential breakout above resistance or a deeper retest of support at ₹124.054. "A contrarian entry may appear if sentiment and momentum diverge in coming sessions," Mehta observes.

Sustained downside momentum as technical signals confirm bearish control

GBP/INR remains under pressure, trading below its 20-day (₹127.196), 50-day (₹128.316), and 200-day (₹127.098) moving averages, reflecting ongoing selling momentum in the short, medium, and long-term trends. The nearest overhead cap is the near-term ceiling at ₹125.565, with support from the near-term floor at ₹124.054. The broader trend retains a bullish undertone based on the MA-50 and MA-200 alignment, but sellers are currently in control. Momentum signals are decisively negative: both MACD and Average Directional Index (ADX) suggest further downside, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reads 33.222, reinforcing a 'Sell' signal and proximity to oversold territory. Stochastic RSI and Commodity Channel Index (CCI) both signal 'Oversold,' and Bull/Bear Power (BBP) at 0.196 indicates buyers control intraday flows, though the oversold rating persists. Awesome Oscillator (AO) confirms the bearish momentum. The pair opened nearly flat, trading near the session's low at ₹125.358, down ₹0.778 or 0.62%. Intraday volatility stands at 0.74%. Sellers remain dominant, and intraday tone shows sustained downside pressure with no signs of a reversal yet. Momentum and oscillator readings are aligned in indicating ongoing weakness.

Earlier, analysts noted that Pound Sterling vs Indian Rupee remained under sustained downside pressure, with technical indicators and central bank measures aligning to reinforce a bearish bias. The current outlook strengthens this view, highlighting a prevailing scenario of consolidation within a defined range, with traders advised to monitor a potential breakdown below ₹124.054 as a signal for further declines.
