Nvidia is close to finalizing a roughly $20 billion investment in OpenAI, a move that would mark the largest single investment in the chipmaker’s history and further cement its strategic role at the center of the global artificial intelligence boom.
People familiar with the matter say the deal is nearly complete but has not yet been signed, with some terms still subject to change, Cryptopolitan reports.
The investment would form part of OpenAI’s broader fundraising round, which could ultimately reach as much as $100 billion, underscoring the extraordinary scale of capital now flowing into advanced AI development.
OpenAI’s ambitious fundraising target has attracted interest from several major players. According to Bloomberg, Amazon has discussed investing up to $50 billion, while SoftBank has been linked to talks involving a potential $30 billion commitment. Nvidia’s planned $20 billion contribution has drawn particular attention given its role as the dominant supplier of high-performance chips used to train and run large AI models.
The proposed investment returned to the spotlight after reports that an earlier, far more ambitious plan involving Nvidia had stalled. A $100 billion investment concept in OpenAI announced in September was said to be “on ice,” fueling speculation that the companies were no longer aligned on strategy or valuation.
Both companies have since moved quickly to address the rumors. Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang, speaking in Taipei on Saturday, said, “We will definitely participate in the next round of financing because it’s such a good investment.” He added that the deal could be “the largest investment we’ve ever made.”
Huang reiterated that message days later in an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, saying, “There’s no drama involved,” and confirming, “Everything’s on track.” Despite those assurances, Nvidia shares fell more than 3.4% on Tuesday, reflecting lingering investor sensitivity around the size and implications of the deal.
OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman also sought to shut down speculation, posting on X: “We love working with NVIDIA and they make the best AI chips in the world.”

A finalized $20 billion investment would highlight the deep interdependence between leading AI model developers and the companies supplying the computing power behind them. It would also signal how competition, scale and capital intensity are reshaping the AI sector, potentially setting benchmarks for future technology funding rounds.
