Reform UK funding scrutiny deepens after Farage discloses £5 million gift from Tether stakeholder
Reform UK faces funding probe

Questions over Reform UK's funding are intensifying after Nigel Farage revealed that a major Tether stakeholder gave him a roughly £5 million personal gift in 2024 for security costs. The payment adds to broader scrutiny of political donations linked to the crypto industry, as Christopher Harborne has already donated about £12 million to the party.

Highlights

  • Richard Harborne, a 12% Tether stakeholder, gave Nigel Farage a £5 million personal gift for lifetime security, bypassing formal UK campaign finance disclosure.
  • Harborne has already donated approximately £12 million to Reform UK, excluding this new personal security payment to Farage.
  • Reform UK champions crypto policy, accepts crypto donations, and faces scrutiny as the UK government moves to ban political crypto contributions to prevent foreign influence.

Gift disclosure and donation structure

The Telegraph, citing an interview with Farage as reported by The Block, reported on Wednesday that Harborne, a billionaire and 12% stakeholder in USDT issuer Tether, gave the Reform UK leader the seven-figure sum as a personal gift rather than a party donation.

Farage said the money was intended to cover his security for life, pointing to threats against him, a firebombing at his home and the 2019 incident in which he was struck by a milkshake. The payment was reportedly not formally disclosed under UK campaign finance laws because it was structured as a personal gift.

Harborne, a British citizen, is already one of Reform UK's biggest financial backers. Filings show he has donated roughly £12 million to the party, excluding the separate security payment.

Crypto policy focus and political impact

Reform UK has made crypto and digital assets a prominent part of its platform, with Farage arguing that the UK should become a global crypto hub and backing policies to reduce capital gains taxes on crypto. The party also becomes the first in the UK to accept crypto donations.

The latest disclosure emerges only weeks after the UK moves to ban political donations made in crypto, with ministers arguing that such payments can conceal the origin of funds. Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the policy is designed to protect democracy, while officials warn crypto contributions can create a route for foreign influence.

We also explained the key compliance steps for voluntary filers, including how they can formally terminate a registration if they never meet the reporting threshold to avoid non-filer notices and other administrative issues.
