UK launches summer savings website for discounted family leisure and dining offers
Summer savings for families

Households across the UK can now search local discounts on family outings and children’s meals through the new Great British Summer Savings website. The platform supports a temporary VAT cut running from 25 June to 1 September as the government seeks to ease cost-of-living pressure during the summer holiday period.

Highlights

  • Government launches Great British Summer Savings scheme, cutting VAT from 20% to 5% on family leisure and dining from 25 June to 1 September.
  • Website lists over 1,700 participating businesses including Nando’s, Bill’s, Las Iguanas, ODEON, and The London Eye, with expansion efforts ongoing.
  • Initiative aims to spur domestic spending in UK leisure and hospitality, complementing other support measures like lower energy bills and frozen rail fares.

VAT-linked offer rollout for summer activities

As reported by GOV.UK, the new website is now live and lets families find nearby participating restaurants, cinemas, theatres and attractions offering lower prices under the government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme.

The temporary tax measure cuts VAT from 20% to 5% on eligible activities, including family cinema tickets, admission tickets for children and adults to amusement parks, and children’s meals eaten in restaurants. The scheme applies from 25 June to 1 September.

More than 1,700 businesses are listed on the site, including Nando’s, Bill’s, Las Iguanas, ODEON and The London Eye. The government says it is engaging daily with additional businesses that have not yet joined, aiming to expand the number of offers available over the summer.

Eligible categories include children’s menu meals served on restaurant premises, children’s and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions, and admission to attractions such as museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, wildlife parks and observation venues.

Regional access and wider household support

Local search is a central part of the website, with users able to enter a postcode to find nearby deals. Examples highlighted by the government include ASK Italian and TENPIN offers in Swansea, YO! SUSHI and Frankie & Benny’s in Belfast, and AirHop Adventure & Trampoline Park and Cineworld in Aberdeen.

Other locations named include Playdale Farm Park in Scarborough and Mini Kingdom Soft Play in Yeovil, underlining the scheme’s focus on directing spending toward domestic leisure and hospitality operators across the UK.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves says the tax cuts and website are intended to help families afford small treats and summer outings. The government also links the initiative to broader measures on household costs, including lower energy bills, frozen rail fares and prescription charges, free breakfasts for children, and higher national minimum and living wages.

Our earlier report on Andy Burnham’s prospective chancellor appointment outlined how expectations were shifting over who would take the Treasury brief ahead of the cabinet announcements. It noted Shabana Mahmood emerging as the leading contender as Ed Miliband was seen as less likely, while stressing the decision was still fluid due to internal party dynamics and last-minute reshuffle changes.
