Monzo explores fundraising after private equity stake talks stall
Monzo eyes fresh funds

Monzo is weighing a fresh capital raise as it looks for funding to support its European expansion plans. The move follows failed takeover discussions with Nubank and stalled talks with buyout groups over a minority stake sale.

Highlights

  • Monzo considers a fundraising round targeting a £7.5bn valuation after private equity stake talks with Advent International, TPG, and CVC stall.
  • Takeover negotiations with Nubank collapsed over valuation differences, shifting Monzo's focus to traditional venture capital for expansion funding.
  • Monzo reports £87.3mn pre-tax profit for FY March 2026 on 39 percent revenue growth to £1.7bn, as it accelerates European growth post-U.S. exit.

Funding options shift after deal talks falter

As first reported by the Financial Times, Monzo is exploring a fundraising round that could value the digital bank at about £7.5bn after separate efforts to secure a sale or private equity investment lose momentum.

People familiar with the discussions say talks with private equity groups over a minority investment have stalled. Advent International, TPG and CVC had discussed taking a stake of up to 15 per cent, with Monzo seeking an £8bn valuation.

Monzo had turned its focus to those buyout discussions after takeover talks with Brazilian fintech Nubank broke down over valuation. A deal at the mooted £10bn level would have given New York-listed Nubank a foothold in the UK, but the group is now likely to concentrate on expanding in the U.S. market.

Monzo, last valued at £4.5bn in an employee share sale in 2024, is now preparing to approach venture capital investors for a more traditional funding round, according to people familiar with the matter. One person says the shift comes as talks with buyout firms stall, despite an earlier board preference for either a takeover or a private equity stake sale over a new fundraising process.

Monzo declines to comment. Advent International, TPG and CVC do not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Expansion push comes with governance and scale pressures

The financing discussions come at an important point for Monzo, which employs more than 5,000 people and is trying to build out its presence beyond its core domestic market. The bank launched in Spain last month and is seeking capital to back broader European expansion ambitions.

Last year, major investors including Accel and Iconiq push back after the surprise departure of chief executive TS Anil. Shareholders demand the removal of Monzo's chair and greater investor representation on the board, while Anil returns to the board as a non-executive director.

Diana Layfield, who succeeds Anil as chief executive, closes Monzo's U.S. operations and refocuses the business on growth in Europe, including launches in Ireland and Spain. Founded in 2015 by Tom Blomfield, Monzo now has more than 16mn customers, almost all of them in the UK.

The bank reports £87.3mn in pre-tax profit for the fiscal year to March 2026, up from £60.5mn a year earlier, while revenue rises 39 per cent to £1.7bn. Even so, Monzo remains smaller than domestic rival Revolut, which serves 80mn customers across more than 40 countries, and Layfield is working to broaden revenue through lending and added features such as mobile phone e-sims.

Our earlier article on Mario Draghi’s warning about restrictive monetary policy examined how keeping interest rates above growth rates can worsen debt dynamics and, if pushed too far, undercut the investment needed for long-term growth. It also highlighted his call for central banks to prioritise inflation control while avoiding unnecessary damage to productive investment, alongside proposals such as deeper EU market integration and targeted funding to support innovation.
