Alex Bosworth: Bitcoin LN could reach $1 trillion of volume in a decade
Lightning Network may hit $1 trillion volume

Alex Bosworth, head of infrastructure at Lightning Labs, believes that as shared UTXOs become more widely built out and productized, Bitcoin's Lightning Network (LN) could see volume reach as high as $1 trillion within 10 years.

He acknowledged that predicting a decade ahead is difficult and noted that volume growth is challenging off chain, as the main blockchain excels at handling large transactions. Bosworth also pointed out the need to avoid premature optimization as Lightning evolves.

Bosworth has previously discussed two main methods for receiving payments via Lightning Network apps, with a focus on inbound liquidity as a key factor for speed and cost. He has also compared shared UTXOs to the Lightning Network, drawing an analogy with web versus app stores in terms of user self-determination. The ongoing development of shared UTXO models reflects Bosworth's continued attention to infrastructure and payment reliability.
