Pakistan unveils first crypto regulator

Pakistan has shifted from a blanket ban to a working regulatory regime for virtual assets in just 15 months. The country's first virtual-assets regulator has been introduced under the Virtual Assets Act 2026, according to Bilal bin Saqib. The State Bank of Pakistan's 2018 banking ban related to virtual assets has been lifted, and licensing regulations were implemented 170 days after the Act's assent, with a portal now live.

Bilal bin Saqib has previously urged Pakistan and the Global South to actively participate in shaping their financial and digital futures. At the United Nations, he called on emerging economies to help shape a fair global financial infrastructure through collaborative efforts. Saqib’s statements have highlighted ongoing discussions around financial inclusion within the region.
