General Atlantic revives IPO effort with JPMorgan lead role
General Atlantic IPO returns

Private equity-backed listings are regaining momentum as investor appetite improves in the U.S. market. General Atlantic is now moving ahead again with an initial public offering after shelving its earlier plan amid volatility in late 2023.

Highlights

  • General Atlantic has revived its IPO plans, hiring JPMorgan Chase as lead underwriter alongside Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, with a possible 2024 listing.
  • The firm confidentially filed for a listing in December 2023 but delayed due to market volatility, resuming efforts as U.S. IPO activity improves.
  • General Atlantic manages about $130 billion in assets, with investments in Anthropic, PhonePe, and Banamex highlighting its global portfolio scale.

Bank lineup and revived listing timeline

As first reported by Reuters, citing Bloomberg News, General Atlantic has selected JPMorgan Chase to lead its initial public offering, with Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs also hired for the deal. People familiar with the discussions say the listing could take place as soon as this year, although talks are ongoing and details, including the final number of banks involved, could still change.

The New York-based firm confidentially filed for a listing in December 2023 but postponed the process because of market volatility. General Atlantic, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs decline to comment, while JPMorgan does not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bloomberg News first reported JPMorgan's hiring as lead underwriter, while The Wall Street Journal first reported that the company's listing plans had been revived.

IPO market backdrop and portfolio scale

The renewed push comes as the U.S. IPO market rebounds in recent months, supported by stronger investor sentiment and a broader willingness among companies across sectors to test public markets. One of the most prominent offerings earlier this year is SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk.

General Atlantic manages about $130 billion in assets and says on its website that it has invested a total of $121 billion since inception. Its global portfolio includes artificial intelligence company Anthropic, India's digital payments group PhonePe and Mexican bank Banamex.
