Moderna remains overheated despite pullback as downside risk stays elevated
Moderna remains one of the most overheated biotech stocks after its powerful summer rally. The correction has already removed part of the extreme momentum, but the coming weeks could bring another important test for buyers.
Nature Biotechnology recently pointed out that Moderna’s mRNA seasonal flu vaccine, mFlusiva has been approved for adults between 50 and 64 years old. This is the seasonal influenza vaccine that uses mRNA technology. Clinical trials showed it worked better than the Fluarix vaccine in stopping infection or creating a strong immune response.
Investors will also be watching Moderna closely as the company prepares for events. Moderna is scheduled to present at the Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare Conference on September 14, followed by the Bernstein Healthcare Forum on September 23.

MRNA remains overheated despite the pullback
The downside move highlighted earlier fully played out, with MRNA reaching the target area around $131.
This level now becomes important from both a short- and medium-term perspective. A sustained move below $131 would increase the probability of a deeper correction toward $114.50, where an unfilled gap from August 19 is located.
Despite the pullback, the stock remains significantly overheated. The RSI (14) is still near overbought territory, while the price remains roughly 52% above the 50-day SMA and 140% above the 200-day SMA. Those gaps have narrowed considerably since early September but remain extremely wide.
A decisive break and sustained move above $160 would invalidate the downside scenario.
Moderna enters another high-risk catalyst window
For Moderna, near-term volatility is being driven not only by technical overheating but also by a dense corporate calendar. Management is due to meet investors at major healthcare conferences on September 14 and September 23, while the market continues to await detailed Phase 3 data for the company’s personalized cancer therapy.
With the stock still trading far above its long-term averages, even a modest shift in expectations could produce a disproportionately large move. Holding $131 therefore becomes especially important: as long as this level remains intact, the correction stays relatively controlled, while a breakdown could significantly widen the downside range.
