IBM shares eye $252 as Nvidia and AMD slide on AI concerns
The market is drawing a clearer line between different parts of the AI sector. While semiconductor stocks come under pressure, IBM is showing unusual relative strength in today’s session.
Following calls from executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies to take a more cautious approach to scaling the capabilities of the most advanced models, investors have started reducing exposure to companies more dependent on continued aggressive AI infrastructure spending. MarketWatch also highlighted gains in IBM and Salesforce, with software companies emerging as potential beneficiaries of expectations that any slowdown in frontier AI development would be less damaging to applied enterprise software.
For IBM, that rotation is relatively easy to explain. The company gains AI exposure not only through infrastructure, but also through watsonx, automation, consulting and enterprise software. Its investment case is therefore less dependent on the continued expansion of frontier-model scale than that of accelerator manufacturers.
IBM is also holding Storage Scale Day in New York on September 14, with the agenda including updates on IBM Storage Scale, solutions for Nvidia workloads and a separate update on the Nvidia partnership. The event is unlikely to be a major standalone market catalyst, but it reinforces IBM’s positioning at the intersection of enterprise software and AI infrastructure.

IBM approaches the unfilled June gap
The setup highlighted earlier fully played out. IBM tested resistance near $242 on September 11, while the advance extended to around $248 in premarket trading on September 14.
For the regular session, the $252–255.50 area becomes the key resistance zone. An unfilled gap from June 23, 2026 is located within this range, so supply could increase noticeably if the stock continues to rise.
The nearest support sits at $244. As long as the stock remains above this level, the bullish setup stays intact.
A decisive break and sustained move below $244 would invalidate the current momentum and provide the first sign that an attempt to close the June gap is being delayed.
IBM separates from the semiconductor selloff
IBM’s relative strength on September 14 stands out against the broader weakness across the AI sector. While IBM is trading near $248 in premarket trading, Nvidia is down roughly 2–3% and AMD has fallen around 4%. Nasdaq 100 futures are also down more than 1.5%.
That divergence is notable: IBM is rising not alongside the broader technology market, but despite its weakness. Investors appear to be distinguishing between companies directly exposed to the pace of AI chip capital spending and more diversified providers of enterprise software and infrastructure services.
