Biogen upgrade points to pipeline trial catalysts and share upside
Biogen eyes trial-driven gains

Biogen is entering a period of closely watched clinical updates that JPMorgan says could strengthen investor confidence in its growth outlook. The bank upgrades the biotech stock to overweight and raises its price target to $300 from $210, citing several trial and readthrough milestones extending into 2027.

Highlights

  • JPMorgan upgraded Biogen to overweight with a $300 price target, implying 33% upside, citing multiple pipeline milestones in the next few quarters.
  • Biogen's felzartamab phase 3 data is expected in first half of 2027 and is seen as the largest pipeline opportunity, with potential to outperform current Street estimates.
  • Biogen shares are up around 28% year to date and 26 of 38 analysts have a buy or strong buy rating, according to LSEG data.

Upcoming trial data drive rating change

As reported by CNBC, citing JPMorgan, the investment bank sees an increasingly attractive catalyst path for Biogen as multiple pipeline programs approach important data releases over the next few quarters. Analyst Chris Schott says the stronger outlook supports both the rating upgrade from neutral to overweight and a higher valuation target, with the new $300 price objective implying 33% upside from Friday's close.

Schott highlights several expected milestones in 2027, including updates tied to felzartamab, readthroughs from Eli Lilly's TRAILBLAZER-ALZ-3 study relevant to Leqembi, and progress for litifilimab in cutaneous lupus erythematosus, or CLE. He says litifilimab stands out because there are currently no approved therapies for CLE, while data from two phase 3 trials testing the drug's efficacy is due in the fourth quarter of 2026.

JPMorgan also identifies felzartamab, an investigational treatment for rare kidney diseases, as the biggest opportunity in Biogen's pipeline. Phase 3 data for that treatment is expected in the first half of 2027, and Schott says the drug could outperform existing Street estimates based on its initial indication and its commercial potential if approved.

Sales outlook and market backing

Schott adds that felzartamab could ramp up sales quickly if it wins approval, pointing to what he describes as a relatively straightforward patient identification process for transplant patients and Biogen's experienced nephrology sales force following its Apellis acquisition. That commercial setup, combined with the upcoming clinical readout, underpins JPMorgan's view that the program can materially lift sentiment toward the stock.

The bank's stance broadly aligns with Wall Street consensus. LSEG data shows 26 of the 38 analysts covering Biogen hold a buy or strong buy rating on the shares, which are already up about 28% year to date.
