U.S. stocks eye earnings-driven moves in telecom, airlines and big tech
Earnings drive stock moves

Wall Street is heading into Wednesday's session with attention shifting from a broad rally in the Dow Industrials to a fresh round of corporate earnings and stock-specific catalysts. Focus is centering on premarket updates from AT&T, Abbott Laboratories, Philip Morris and United Airlines, alongside after-the-bell results from IBM, Meta Platforms and Tesla.

Highlights

  • AT&T rises almost 7% over three months but remains 20% below its March high as traders anticipate earnings reports to set market tone.
  • United Airlines stock drops 30% from its June high after an earnings miss and outlook cut, even as passenger counts climb more than 2% year-over-year.
  • CoreWeave trades above $64 after hours, recovering from steep losses yet staying down 51% over 12 months and off 20% in the past week.

Earnings calendar sets the next market tone

As reported by CNBC, traders are watching a heavy slate of company updates after the Dow Industrials jump more than 500 points on Tuesday on growing optimism over the earnings season.

Among the companies in focus before the opening bell, AT&T is up almost 7% over the past three months but remains 20% below its March high. Abbott Laboratories is flat over the same period and stands 22% below its November high, while Philip Morris is up nearly 4% in three months and is 5% off its peak.

United Airlines is also drawing attention after its earnings miss estimates and the carrier cuts its outlook. The airline cites fuel costs as part of the pressure, even as passenger counts are up more than 2% from a year ago, and the stock is down 30% from its June high.

Sector leaders and volatile names remain in focus

Investor attention is also turning to CoreWeave after Altimeter Capital's Brad Gerstner says last week that he sold out of the stock but still sees potential in the company, describing its management team as among the best in the business. CoreWeave closes higher on Tuesday above $62 a share and continues gaining after hours past $64, though it is still down 51% over 12 months and off 20% in a week.

Iren is up almost 8% after hours on earnings, but the stock remains 65% below its November high and 35% under the $225.64 peak reached shortly after its June IPO. Market participants are also tracking major after-the-bell reports from IBM, Meta Platforms and Tesla, with IBM up nearly 14% in three months but 27% below its June high, Meta up 7% in three months but 11% off last month's high, and Tesla up 1% in three months while staying 25% below its December high.

In our earlier coverage of the S&P 500’s push toward the 8,000 level, we noted that investors were bracing for a critical test from third-quarter earnings after a rally led by AI-linked megacaps. That piece highlighted how higher oil prices, elevated Treasury yields, and weakening market breadth were raising the bar for results and amplifying concentration risk around a small group of market leaders.
