Global Economics and Policy by Kristalina Georgieva
Kristalina Georgieva has served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since October 2019. A Bulgarian national with a PhD in economics from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, she previously held senior roles at the World Bank and the European Commission. Under her leadership, the IMF distributed more than $650 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to its member countries during the COVID-19 crisis. She now leads global policy on digital currencies, macroprudential stability, and cross-border capital flows.
In March 2025, Georgieva told Reuters that early signs of U.S. digital deregulation were “encouraging,” noting that effective crypto policy must balance innovation with risk containment. She reaffirmed the IMF’s position that stablecoins must be fully backed by real assets and cautioned against the proliferation of synthetic tokens without proper reserves. Her comments were made at the IMF Spring Meetings and received international coverage, with transcripts downloaded more than 90,000 times through the Fund’s portal. The IMF under her direction continues to publish research on CBDC deployment models and financial inclusion, with digital pilot programs tracked across more than 40 economies.
